Roblox age checks expand to more regions
After first offering voluntary age checks in November to help limit communication between minors and adults, Roblox is moving to enforce age verification for chat access worldwide. The requirement already applies in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. It is now being extended to all regions where chat is available, including the United States.
Roblox has described the policy as the first age-check requirement for users of every age on a large online gaming platform. The company says its goal is to support age-appropriate communication and create more barriers between adult and minor users. It has not made clear how verified users will communicate with people who have not yet completed a check during the rollout.
Practical point: Players who want to use chat should check whether the requirement has reached their region and complete the in-app process. Without verification, the chat feature is unavailable.
How Roblox chat age groups work
After an age check, a user is placed into one of six age groups: under 7, 9–12, 13–15, 15–17, 18–20, or 21 and older. By default, users can communicate only with players in the group directly above or below their own.
For instance, Roblox says a nine-year-old cannot chat with anyone older than 13. A 16-year-old, meanwhile, can communicate with users aged 13 to 20. These limits are intended to keep conversations closer to a user’s age group rather than allowing unrestricted contact across all ages.
Roblox also says it will continually assess account behavior for signs that someone may be acting substantially older or younger than their assigned group. If the platform identifies a mismatch, it may ask that user to complete the age-check process again. Users should follow any verification prompts in the app and avoid sharing personal details in chat.
What Roblox says about age-check privacy
According to Roblox, the age-check process is private, quick, and secure, and is handled through Persona. The company says personal images and data are deleted immediately after processing. More than 50% of daily active users in the countries where the requirement was already in place had verified their ages, Roblox reported.
Age verification remains voluntary in the sense that users are not required to complete it to use Roblox overall. However, it is necessary for anyone who wants access to chat. Users who have questions about how their information is handled should review the platform’s current privacy and age-verification details before proceeding.
Earlier Roblox safety updates
The chat requirement follows other safety changes Roblox has made over the past year. These include adding a “sensitive issues” content label to experiences. In November 2024, the platform also introduced measures that prevented users under 13 from accessing direct messaging in platform chats and restricted the messages they could broadcast in games and experiences.
