Rockstar’s next game won’t take eight years to make: “The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during GTA 6 will allow us to do things more quickly”

The Rockstar next game may not require the lengthy development cycle associated with Grand Theft Auto 6. Company leaders say the technology, production tools and larger team assembled for GTA 6 could help the studio develop future projects more efficiently, although they have not announced a specific timetable for another release.

Why Rockstar expects its next game to take less time

Rockstar’s workforce has grown considerably since Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018. At that time, the studio had 2,441 employees. By 2026, it employed 4,711 people across 12 offices. Of that total, 4,020 worked in development and quality assurance, while 690 worked in publishing.

Senior leaders say the investment made during GTA 6’s production gives the studio a foundation to build on. Co-head of development Phil Hooker said the engine, tools and team developed for the project could make future work faster. He also described the opportunity to expand in new directions rather than simply increasing the scale of each game.

For players, this does not confirm that the next release is close or that every future game will follow a shorter schedule. Development time still depends on a project’s scope, production needs and quality standards. The practical takeaway is that Rockstar believes parts of its GTA 6 infrastructure may be reusable.

GTA 6 release delays and the decision to take more time

GTA 6 was announced in 2023 with a planned release in 2025. Its launch was later delayed to May 26, 2026, and then rescheduled to November 19. Rockstar’s head of publishing, Jennifer Kolbe, recalled explaining the delays to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. She said he initially questioned the news but understood the reasoning after they discussed it.

Zelnick has previously said he was not especially concerned about the business impact of the delay. He has also explained that additional time is sometimes needed across the company’s games business to polish a title and release it in its best possible form. For players, a revised date is worth checking against official announcements, since schedules can change during development.

Leaks led to tighter security measures

Rockstar’s leaders also discussed the effects of leaks during GTA 6’s development. In September 2022, a network intrusion led to 90 early gameplay videos being shared publicly. Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut described seeing unfinished work circulated without permission as invasive and emotionally difficult.

After the incident, Rockstar increased security measures and ended remote work in April 2024. Kolbe said that keeping the game within a more controlled set of environments was a security consideration. The studio is also dealing with another leak-related incident: a hacker group has circulated footage and threatened to release a full build, including story mode, unless Take-Two Interactive meets its demands.

These incidents underline why game studios limit access to unfinished projects. Early footage may not represent the final experience, and material released without authorization can lack important context. Readers should treat unverified clips and claims cautiously and look for official information before drawing conclusions about the game.

What Rockstar’s comments mean for its next game

Rockstar has not revealed what its next game will be or when it might launch. Its comments point instead to a possible production advantage: a larger workforce and tools developed for GTA 6 could support faster work on later projects. The Rockstar next game timeline remains unknown, so the clearest confirmed information is that the studio expects to build on the technology and experience gained during GTA 6’s development.
