Saudi PIF moving $12bn of games firm shares to subsidiary Savvy

Saudi PIF gaming investments worth about $12 billion are being transferred to Savvy Games Group, the fund’s gaming-focused subsidiary. The move is expected to place stewardship of several major video game company holdings under Savvy, while the reported approach to managing those investments remains hands-off.

What the Saudi PIF gaming investments transfer includes

Bloomberg reports that the Public Investment Fund (PIF) is transferring roughly $12 billion in shares to Savvy. When the process is complete, Savvy is expected to hold stakes of around 10% in companies including Koei Tecmo, NCSoft, Nexon and Square Enix. The transfer is also reported to include PIF holdings in Nintendo and Bandai Namco.

A regulatory filing in December 2025 showed that the PIF had already moved 11 million shares in Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Grand Theft Auto. These transactions concern ownership of shares; they do not, by themselves, indicate a change in how the companies operate.

Useful context: A transfer between a parent fund and its subsidiary can change which organisation oversees an investment without changing the underlying company’s day-to-day management. Savvy is reportedly expected to continue the PIF’s hands-off approach.

Why the holdings are being moved to Savvy

The plan to place the PIF’s gaming investments with Savvy had been discussed before. In September 2024, a company representative told Japanese newspaper Nikkei that the transfer was intended and could happen as early as 2025.

“These transfers will move the stewardship of PIF’s games investments to Savvy, given Savvy is a leading games organisation for the PIF and a core component of the National Gaming and Esports Strategy,” Savvy spokesperson Amar Batkhuu said.

Saudi Arabia established Savvy Games Group in November 2021 through the PIF. CEO Brian Ward described the company’s creation as part of the country’s economic diversification and social transformation. For readers tracking the industry, the key distinction is between Savvy’s role as an investment steward and the separate operations of the companies in its portfolio.

Savvy’s wider gaming portfolio

Savvy has built a portfolio spanning game development, publishing and esports. Its investments and acquisitions include a $1 billion stake in Sweden’s Embracer Group, the acquisition of Scopely, and the esports businesses ESL Gaming and FaceIt.

Savvy was also reported to be the strategic partner that planned to invest $2 billion in Embracer Group before withdrawing at the last minute. Embracer subsequently laid off thousands of staff, closed studios and cancelled projects as part of a restructuring. The company has since split into three separate businesses.

Scopely’s Monopoly Go has surpassed $6 billion in revenue, becoming the fastest mobile game to reach that milestone, according to the source report. These examples illustrate the range of businesses connected to Savvy’s investment strategy, though each company’s performance and decisions remain distinct.

What to watch next

The PIF is also the largest investor in the proposed $55 billion deal to acquire Electronic Arts. If the deal is completed, the fund would own more than 93.4% of the games company. The transaction’s completion remains a condition of that potential ownership figure.

For anyone following Saudi PIF gaming investments, the main developments to monitor are the completion of the share transfers, any regulatory filings confirming ownership changes, and future announcements about Savvy’s investment strategy. The reported transfer reorganises the PIF’s gaming holdings under a specialist subsidiary, but it does not automatically mean that Savvy will take an active role in the management of each company.
