Sega and Netflix announce partnership to develop Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven adaptations

The Sega Netflix partnership will bring three game properties to film and television: Crazy Taxi, Sonic and Stranger Than Heaven. The projects span different formats and audiences, from a film based on the arcade-driving series to an animated show for young children.

What the Sega Netflix partnership includes

The companies plan to develop adaptations of three titles from Sega’s catalogue. The announcement outlines the projects and some of the creative team members, but does not give release dates or provide details about casting.

  • A film based on Crazy Taxi
  • A live-action crime film inspired by Stranger Than Heaven
  • A new animated Sonic series aimed at an upper pre-school audience

Because each project is at a different stage of development, viewers should treat the announcement as an early outline rather than a schedule. No premiere dates were included.

Crazy Taxi film and Stranger Than Heaven adaptation

The planned Crazy Taxi film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, whose credits include the The Naked Gun reboot. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara, producers associated with the Sonic franchise, are also attached as producers.

Stranger Than Heaven is set to become a live-action crime film, with Nakahara producing. The announcement does not specify the film’s plot, setting or cast. For audiences, the key distinction is that this adaptation is described as live-action and crime-focused, while the other projects take different approaches.

A new Sonic animated series for younger viewers

The new Sonic show is intended for an “upper pre-school audience.” It will join Sonic Prime, Netflix’s existing animated series, which premiered in 2022. The announcement does not explain whether the new show will connect to Sonic Prime or tell a separate story.

Sega president and COO Shuji Utsumi said the company wants adaptations to respect what makes each game distinct. Netflix vice president of nonfiction and transmedia Brandon Riegg described the projects as a chance to explore three different periods of Sega’s catalogue and introduce the titles to new viewers.

How the projects fit Netflix’s game adaptations

The planned adaptations add to Netflix’s broader slate of video-game-related projects. Its lineup includes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Devil May Cry, a live-action Assassin’s Creed series and a Gears of War film, alongside projects based on Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, Clash of Clans and Overcooked.

The announcement also follows Netflix’s collaboration with Rockstar on an exclusive, 30-minute extended gameplay preview of Grand Theft Auto 6. The event received 31.1 million views on Netflix within four days and generated more than 100,000 sign-ups during its six-hour exclusivity window.

What to watch for next

For now, the most useful details to track are updates on release windows, casting and story direction. The Sega Netflix partnership has established the projects’ formats and several key creative roles, but further information will be needed to understand how each adaptation develops.
