The Best Way To Experience One Of Vanillaware’s Best

Muramasa: Revenant Blades brings Vanillaware’s stylized side-scrolling action game to modern consoles in a redrawn 4K edition. The collection combines Muramasa Rebirth, the PlayStation Vita remaster of Muramasa: The Demon Blade, with its Genroku Legends story DLC. For players who missed the earlier Wii and Vita releases, this package offers a way to experience the game and its additional stories together.

What Muramasa: Revenant Blades Includes

Muramasa: The Demon Blade first appeared as a Nintendo Wii exclusive, and Muramasa Rebirth later brought an enhanced version to PlayStation Vita in 2013. The Vita release also introduced Genroku Legends, a standalone DLC featuring additional stories and playable characters. Revenant Blades combines that material into one edition, so players do not need to track down the original releases to explore the main game and its DLC.

The remaster’s artwork has been redrawn by Vanillaware’s artists for a 4K presentation. That visual update supports the game’s detailed, painterly look while bringing its characters, environments, and action to modern screens.

A Fantastical Edo-period setting

The story takes place during Japan’s Edo period, under shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, who ruled from 1680 to 1709. Its setting draws on feudal Japanese architecture and scenery, then layers in folklore and demons. The result is a world that moves between recognizable historic influences and fantasy.

Stages use shifting directions and connected screens, with mountain ranges in the distance and forests that feel dense and winding. In city areas, Machiya-style houses and Nagaya homes crowd together, creating layered streets and buildings that players can explore or battle around. Take time to look at the backgrounds as you move through each area: the environmental detail is a major part of the game’s atmosphere.

Fast sword combat with room to improve

The fighting is easy to grasp but demanding to master. It has the pace of a beat ’em up, with hack-and-slash swordplay that rewards timing, counters, and careful positioning. Players can juggle enemies in the air, respond to attacks, and clash blades to avoid taking damage. In the preview, the Moral difficulty—described as hard—made encounters especially tense and encouraged close attention to enemy moves.

Revenant Blades promises more than 100 swords to forge, along with dozens of skills to upgrade and learn. These systems give players ways to develop their approach as they progress. If a fight feels overwhelming, paying attention to when enemies attack and making use of counters can be as important as striking quickly.

Boss fights test timing and positioning

The preview included two boss encounters. Kurozaru is a large, fast opponent who uses shurikens and area-of-effect attacks to keep the player at a distance. The giant centipedes move around the level, requiring attacks on different parts of their bodies before they can be defeated. These fights put the game’s movement and combat timing to work in different ways.

What to expect from the full collection

The preview covered roughly an hour of play, including the first two acts, but left much of the collection unexplored. The additional stories, unlockable katanas, further skills, and more of the remastered environments were not shown in full. The DLC stories also feature new localization and English voiceover.

For returning players, the upgraded controls and newly redrawn presentation offer reasons to revisit the adventure. Newcomers can expect a combination of folklore-inspired scenery, challenging sword combat, and progression built around forging weapons and improving skills. Muramasa: Revenant Blades brings the game’s earlier releases and story DLC together in one 4K package, making it a practical way to experience this Vanillaware classic.
