The NBA Street Spiritual Successor Is A Strong Prospect

NBA The Run aims to bring the energy of classic arcade basketball to a new online-focused 3v3 game. Built around fast matches, distinctive NBA players, and changing tournament rules, it draws on the spirit of NBA Street while shaping its own approach to competitive streetball.

NBA The Run brings arcade basketball back to the court

For many fans, games such as NBA Street Vol. 2 made basketball feel immediate and playful. They combined dramatic dunks and physical defense with accessible controls, creating an experience that could appeal to dedicated sports gamers and casual players alike. As arcade-style sports games became less common, there was more room for a new title to revisit that formula.

Play by Play Studios is developing NBA The Run. Its team includes sports-game veterans such as Mike Young, who previously worked on NBA Street, FIFA Street, and the SSX series before serving as creative director on the Madden franchise for nearly a decade.

The project began in 2021 as The Run: Got Next, a streetball game featuring fictional characters. Around 2024, the NBA approached the studio about licensing its teams and players. The game now includes 32 NBA players, while keeping its original focus on approachable arcade gameplay and characterful presentation.

Distinct players and expressive 3v3 gameplay

NBA The Run presents players as individual characters rather than interchangeable figures on a team. Their looks and animations are crafted to reflect their real-world counterparts, with heightened details that suit the game’s arcade style.

The on-court action emphasizes satisfying dunks, forceful defense, and the clear sound of a made long-range shot. Player choice also matters: versatile stars such as Anthony Edwards and LeBron James play differently from specialists such as Steph Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The developers have drawn inspiration from famously dominant athletes in sports games, including Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl and Michael Vick in Madden NFL 04. Victor Wembanyama illustrates that approach: he can be a powerful presence around the basket on both ends of the court and can also make shots from beyond the arc with some regularity.

Practical tip: Consider how each player’s strengths fit together before building a team. A roster with different skills can be better prepared for changing match conditions than one built around a single style.

Changing rules keep tournaments unpredictable

NBA The Run uses a Knockout Tournament structure, with rules that can vary from one game to the next. Some matches award extra points for dunks, while others place more value on three-pointers. Certain rule sets use a timer, making possession and clock management more important.

These variations can affect which team compositions are most useful. A lineup focused on tall players may have an advantage when scoring in the paint is rewarded, but could be less suited to a match that favors three-point shooting. Checking the rules before play can help you choose a strategy that fits the game ahead.

The changing conditions are intended to make each tournament run feel different. Matches are designed to be short, so a player can return to another tournament soon after an early loss rather than committing to a long session.

Online play and ways to join a match

The game is designed around online play. Players can team up with friends, join matchmade teammates, or play solo while controlling all three members of their team. That solo option offers a different way to approach the action for players who prefer managing the full lineup themselves.

At the time of the preview, the game was scheduled for a June release, with a beta set to begin on May 1. Because those dates can depend on the original announcement timeline, check current release information before making plans to play.

Is NBA The Run worth watching?

NBA The Run combines quick 3v3 matches, recognizable NBA stars, and tournament rules that encourage players to adjust their approach. Its arcade focus may appeal to people looking for a more immediate alternative to simulation-heavy basketball games, while the online format gives matches a short-session structure.

For fans curious about an NBA Street-inspired experience, NBA The Run looks like a promising prospect. Its mix of expressive players, accessible action, and unpredictable rules gives it a distinct identity, even as it draws on the appeal of classic streetball games.
