Too Fun For Words

Out of Words is a cooperative 2D platformer about friendship, trust, and finding a way through an unusual fantasy world. Teenagers Kurt and Karla are separated by the prospect of one of them moving away, then find themselves in a strange, beautiful yet dangerous place where their mouths have disappeared. Its handcrafted stop-motion look catches the eye, while challenges designed around two players give cooperation a central role.

Out of Words Makes Cooperation Part of the Challenge

A chapter-two demo shown during Summer Game Fest Play Days offered a glimpse of how the game brings its two-player design to life. Kurt and Karla cross open grassy areas while curious furry creatures follow and mimic their movements. The sequence then leads into an underwater section, where staying together becomes essential rather than optional.

In the water, the characters need to remain close enough to share an air bubble. If they swim too far apart, the bubble breaks, putting both players at risk. This simple rule encourages frequent coordination and makes positioning important. Players should pay attention to their partner’s location, especially when currents or other obstacles make it harder to stay together.

Gravity-Shifting Puzzles Reward Timing

Another section gives one character access to a blue, stingray-like creature that lets its holder defy gravity. The players explore mossy surfaces on the ground, walls, and ceiling, passing the creature between them to move across different platforms. It works like a baton: each handoff needs to happen at the right moment for both characters to keep progressing.

The mechanic turns communication and timing into practical tools. A long gap, for example, can be crossed by passing the creature back and forth so neither player falls. When playing, it helps to agree on when to make each handoff and to leave enough time for the other person to reach a safe position. The challenge is demanding, but its solution depends on cooperation rather than quick movement alone.

A Handcrafted Stop-Motion World

Out of Words also stands out for its handmade visual style. The characters and environments are brought to life with traditional stop-motion techniques, giving the fantasy setting a tactile, sculpted appearance. The creatures have a crafted quality that supports the game’s distinctive look and makes its world feel different from a conventional animated platformer.

The production design is especially notable in the physical models created for the game. Seeing the detail in a creature sculpture offers a sense of the care involved in building the visual world. For players interested in animation and game art, the stop-motion approach is a major part of the experience, not just a decorative choice.

What to Expect from Out of Words

The demo combines a friendship-focused premise, environmental puzzles, and cooperative movement. Its strongest ideas ask both players to stay aware of one another: the underwater bubble depends on proximity, while the gravity-shifting creature calls for well-timed exchanges. These mechanics make it a good fit for players looking for a platformer where teamwork matters throughout the level.

With its handmade animation and inventive co-op challenges, Out of Words offers a distinctive take on the two-player platformer. The demo’s varied sections suggest that coordination will remain central as Kurt and Karla navigate their predicament. The game is described as launching early next year; check for an updated release date before planning a play session.
