When Beauty Is The Beast

Silent Hill f takes the series beyond its familiar American setting, bringing survival horror to a secluded Japanese town in the 1960s. Its new location and cast offer a fresh starting point, while fog, unsettling creatures, puzzles, and a bleak atmosphere recall the franchise’s classic entries. The preview suggests a compelling horror adventure, though its demanding combat may need refinement.

Silent Hill f: a new story in a familiar kind of nightmare

Set in Ebisugaoka, the game follows Shimizu Hinako, a rebellious teenager living in a difficult household. She resents her abusive father and her mother’s submission to him, and resists the traditional expectations placed on her. Despite her tough exterior, Hinako’s journal reveals a poor opinion of herself. She also misses her older sister, who has married and moved away.

Hinako’s friends include Shu, her childhood companion; Sakuko, an energetic girl from a family of shrine priests; and Rinko, who may have feelings for Shu. Their lives take a frightening turn when a sinister fog and crimson, vein-like growths spread through the town. Ebisugaoka becomes a distorted, flower-covered nightmare, its residents replaced by monsters, and Hinako is separated from her friends.

The story is designed to welcome newcomers. The game is presented as a fresh starting point rather than a continuation that requires knowledge of earlier entries. Its Japanese setting and 1960s period also give the series a distinct visual identity.

Melee combat makes stamina and weapon choices matter

Combat draws on close-range weapons such as pipes, bats, and knives; Hinako does not use guns. Weapons wear down with use and eventually break, and she can carry only three at once. Tool kits can repair equipment, but choosing when to spend a weapon’s durability is part of surviving an encounter. A practical approach is to save stronger weapons for dangerous enemies rather than using them on every threat.

Ebisugaoka’s narrow streets can make it difficult to avoid enemies, so dodging is important. Dodges use stamina, while a perfectly timed last-second dodge restores some of it. Light and heavy attacks have deliberate, weighty animations, giving fights a somewhat Souls-like rhythm. Enemies, however, move quickly, and stamina takes about a second and a half to begin recovering after use. This delay can leave Hinako exposed if she dodges repeatedly.

A major boss encounter highlights the challenge. The enemy’s persistent attacks demand frequent dodging, while chasing it and striking back also consume stamina. The combination can make the fight especially punishing. Balancing evasion with opportunities to attack is essential, but the preview’s assessment is that stamina recovery may be too slow for some encounters.

Focus can help Hinako identify brief counterattack opportunities. Holding the left shoulder trigger darkens the screen and makes an enemy’s vulnerable moment easier to see. Focus uses Sanity, a separate resource that is also spent on powerful charged Focus Attacks. These attacks can deal substantial damage, but charging leaves Hinako open to interruption. Heavier weapons can enable blocks while focusing, although blocking accelerates weapon wear.

Healing and Sanity-restoring items can be used from an item wheel. Prayer shrines act as checkpoints and provide ways to improve Hinako’s chances. Players can equip omamori charms for benefits such as reduced stamina use, though only one can be equipped initially. Shrines also let players exchange valuables and some consumables for Faith, which can restore Sanity or buy omamori from a randomized selection. Since purchases cost hundreds of Faith and become 100 points more expensive each time, it may be sensible to save Faith until a specific need arises.

Puzzles, exploration, and multiple endings

Exploring the town leads to optional locations, strange encounters, and clues about an enigmatic masked man who appears to help Hinako. His intentions remain uncertain. The foggy streets also contain mandatory and optional puzzles, sometimes requiring players to interpret clues while avoiding nearby monsters.

One puzzle uses a poem to identify illustrations on scattered boards while a blind creature hunts by sound. Another sequence traps Hinako in a field where choosing the wrong scarecrow triggers an attack. These challenges offer variety, although cryptic clues may make some solutions harder to understand than intended. When a puzzle feels unclear, carefully revisiting its wording and examining the environment can help distinguish useful details from distractions.

An abandoned middle school sequence captures the series’ familiar approach to exploration: find keys, unlock doors, solve bespoke puzzles, and stay alert for threats. Optional locations, including the town doctor’s home, add smaller mysteries to investigate.

The game has five endings, but the first playthrough follows the same outcome for everyone. The developers describe this structure as a way to deliver a deliberate central story before later playthroughs introduce branching results influenced by the player’s actions. The alternative endings are intended for interpretation rather than being labeled simply good or bad. One also offers a lighthearted UFO conclusion familiar to the series.

Early impressions of Silent Hill f

Frightening creature designs, effective sound, and 3D audio support the game’s tense atmosphere. Its setting and presentation stand out, while the puzzles offer a welcome change of pace from combat. The main concern is the balance of stamina and enemy speed, particularly in demanding fights where dodging and attacking compete for the same resource.

Overall, Silent Hill f looks like a promising survival horror entry with a new setting, a self-contained story, and several reasons to explore beyond the main path. Its unsettling atmosphere and puzzle design make a strong first impression, while the combat will be worth watching for adjustments that could make tough encounters feel more balanced.
